Pet Dental Health Information
General educational information to help you care for your pet's teeth at home.
Important: Our services are non-medical and educational. We do not diagnose, treat, sedate, perform dental procedures or dispense medication. If your pet shows pain, bleeding, swelling, loose teeth or difficulty eating, please see a licensed veterinarian promptly.
Why oral hygiene matters
Plaque builds up on pets' teeth just like ours. Regular at-home cleaning helps keep the mouth fresher and supports overall comfort. Your veterinarian can advise how often professional dental exams are appropriate.
Brushing tips
- Use toothpaste made for pets — never human toothpaste.
- Start slowly: let your pet taste the paste, then touch the gums with a finger brush.
- Keep sessions short and positive, and reward calm behavior.
- Aim for consistency; many owners build up to daily brushing.
Signs to see a veterinarian
- Persistent bad breath
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums
- Loose, broken or discolored teeth
- Drooling, pawing at the mouth or reluctance to eat
- Facial swelling
